Launch of .uk Domain

February 12th, 2014 in Web Development 1 minute read

The domain market is changing on 10th June 2014 new shorter .uk domain names will become available for the very first time.

If you already own the .co.uk equivalent domain then you can pre-order the .uk version now. Pre-ordering the new, shorter domain name safeguards your brand and ensures nobody else can buy your domain.

The introduction of the new domains is the biggest change in the .uk namespace since it began!

The launch of the new shorter domains sees the UK joining other country-code registries who already use shorter domains including Germany which is .de and France who use .fr.

The original .co.uk domains including .org.uk and .plc.uk are staying and you can continue using the .co.uk domain as normal and keep the new domain dormant. But by pre-ordering you are making sure that no other company purchases your equivalent .uk domain and protecting your brand.

We will have to wait and see whether the shorter.uk takes off or whether .co.uk will be sticking around for a little longer.

At Zeal we strongly advise you to pre-order your .uk domain name.

For any of our clients, if we originally bought the domain on your behalf then we can pre-order the new domain for you. Alternatively, if we didn’t buy the original domain then you will need to contact your registrar company. We can find out who your registrar company is if you aren’t sure.

If you have any questions about the new domains or want help pre-ordering, we are more than happy to help.
