Blogging can open a world of opportunities. It gives you a chance to tell your story, and only yours. It gives you access to a network of people you can meet, who can turn into friends, or business partners. Blogging can create opportunities to progress in your field of expertise and can consequently allow you to work yourself up into a higher position. The thought of creating captivating content can be rather daunting, writers block is very common and can eat up a lot of your time. You can read our tips on how to shift writers block here. But back to generating successful blog ideas, when trying to create the perfect post, you should consider the following:
- What niche does your blog fit into? Comedic/satire, beauty, travel, advice, lifestyle etc.
- Find what inspires you – what are you passionate about, what do you want people to know/understand about you?
- What ideas do you have that you want to share with others? Beauty hacks? Love advice? Some knowledge you have that you think would benefit others.
- What target audience are you appealing to? Does it matter to you? Parents? Singles? Children/teens? Uni students?
- Brainstorm ideas – make a mind map, list key words that interest you
- Read other blogs to get inspiration.
- Get personal.
Write about things you’re passionate about
The first step to creating a successful and interesting blog is to find out what you want to write about. If something inspires you, it is likely to come out in your writing and will equate to a much more interesting blog post. But what happens if you don’t know what your passion is? Ask yourself these questions:
- What could you do for the rest of your life without being paid?
- What could you read endless articles, books, theories, magazines etc. on without getting bored?
- What would you do with your life if money was no object?
If you’re still feeling uninspired after answering the questions- don’t worry. Go out! Try new things! Get involved! You may become passionate about something you never expected! Writing what you are passionate about and what inspires you creates a deeper and more engaging blog post than something you found that interests you 10 minutes prior to posting because you panicked about lacking content. Finding what inspires you to write is a definite must have for creating a captivating blog.
Write posts others will benefit from
Do you have any ideas that you want others to know? Maybe a fantastic cookie recipe your grandma gave you? A revolutionary organisational hack that’s made your life that much easier? Relationship advice? Gift ideas? Maybe a makeup hack that makes your winged eyeliner perfect every time? Anything you think could benefit others or could boost your popularity is worth sharing! Hacks are a definite way to boost the traffic on your feed- everyone wants shortcuts in life to make time for the fun stuff! By appealing to a wide range of people with a variety of advice – your followers are sure to increase!
Read other blogs for inspiration
If you’re still struggling to come up with ideas for your blog- research other blogs to get inspiration. Other bloggers have most definitely also struggled to come up with content and possibly struggled to even start their blog. Researching and reading other blogs can influence you and help you create your own original ideas and help boost your follower count! You can also use topic generators such as WordStream, and SEO.com
Brainstorm ideas to find the perfect theme for you
Actually visualising the ideas you have in your head is a great way to pull all your ideas together and create a general sense of an idea of what you want the theme of your blog to be. Once you visually have all your ideas in front of you, you can even start to draw links and relationships between some of your ideas leading you to end up with a broader but a more well-suited theme to your taste!
Know your readers
Once you have a theme in place for you blog (even if the theme is no theme), you need to think about what audience you want your blog to attract. Do you want it to be for children/teenagers? Parents? The elderly? Students? Male/female/both? Once you have a target audience in mind, it is important to cater the blogs language and aesthetic to that group. You don’t want your blog to be too ambiguous and vague!
Don’t be hesitant to get personal
People like to feel as if they can relate to other people. Attachment and connectedness are human traits that we crave. Once people feel like they can relate to the blog and what you have to say, you have a set follower! (Who then in turn can promote your blog!) Humans in ourselves are very similar and want to build relationships with people similar to us, so anything you feel you need to express- someone needs to you to say it. By acquiring followers who relate to you, you can start to build rapport and relationships with them which will boost your popularity.
