How the New Google Update Reinforces the way we do SEO

Content has been ruling the world of SEO for quite some time now and still sits firm on its (iron) throne. When Google rolled out what has been called Panda 4.0 in May this year, there were winners and losers as always when Google tries to improve the search results. So what happened exactly?

The winners who gained SERP visibility were typically content based sites with topical authority. That means that sites with many quality articles covering the same topic has a higher chance of gaining visibility as they are seen as a ‘topical authority content site’. The uniqueness of the content is essential and adds to your authority on the topic.

Sites that had high user interaction through their website were also winners in this update. Shares and comments definitely counts for Panda 4.0. Websites with clear navigational structure were also welcomed by the update, another step by Google to make the user journey as clean and simple as possible.

‘Relevant content’ has been a mantra in SEO for some time now, however even relevant content saw sites get de-ranked in the update. Not solely because of the relevant content of course, but because the content was either thin or automatically generated.

In conclusion, the importance once again lies in the usability and the user journey; the key being content. Google updates its algorithm to make it easier for us to find what we are looking for, and if we can find what we are looking for quickly (good site navigation), in great quality content, and can see that other people found the content useful, then that’s what Google want to endorse.
