Before Tuesday 28th August 2018, you had to wait for Instagram to decide you were important enough for a blue tick – showing your account is official. Similar to Twitter. But now, for the first time ever, you can ask for one. Here’s how…
What to do
Go to your profile page. See the button in the top right? The three dots (or lines)? Tap. Then click ‘Settings’ and find ‘Request Verification’ at the bottom of your screen.
If it’s not there, update your app. Still missing? Try again later – not everyone will see it immediately, but Instagram are rolling it out slowly.
If it’s there, get busy filling in the form. Type your username and full name, take a photo of your government-issued ID – something on this list, with your name on and upload. Then you’re done. Finished in under a minute. All you have to do is wait for a notification saying you’re verified. Or saying you’re not. Your blue tick is never guaranteed. Lie on your application and your account might get deleted.
Instagram won’t verify general interest accounts – sorry, @puppymemes. You have to be a real person, a registered business or entity. You have to be well-known and searched for. But stay hopeful because you can improve your chances of getting one (and only one) account verified for yourself or your business. Choose carefully. Make your account ‘Public’. Pick a profile picture. Make sure your bio doesn’t link to your Facebook, Twitter or other social media accounts. Easy stuff.
